1. Crawlability
Googlebot must be able to access and follow links to your pages.
robots.txt — The file at /robots.txt that tells crawlers which parts of your site they’re allowed to access. Common mistakes: accidentally blocking the entire site, blocking CSS and JS files (preventing rendering), blocking important content directories.
Internal linking — Googlebot discovers pages by following links. An “orphan page” with no internal links pointing to it may never be crawled. Ensure every important page has at least one internal link from somewhere else on the site.
Crawl budget — Large sites should consider how many pages Googlebot can crawl per day. Faceted navigation (e.g., e-commerce filter combinations) can generate millions of low-value URL variations that waste crawl budget.
2. Indexability
A crawlable page isn’t necessarily an indexed page.
noindex tag — <meta name="robots" content="noindex"> tells Google not to add a page to its index. Common mistake: leaving this tag on pages from a staging environment that were accidentally pushed to production.
